## Runs On

What it takes to serve bert-base-uncased (110M parameters): the memory its weights need at each precision, and the cheapest way to rent enough data-center GPUs to hold them.

| Precision | Weights | Memory needed | Cheapest setup | Per hour | Also fits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 16-bit | 0.2 GB | 0.3 GB | 1x [MI300X](https://savrn.com/ai-index/pricing/gpus/mi300x) (192 GB) Vultr | $1.85 | [1x H100](https://savrn.com/ai-index/pricing/gpus/h100) $1.99 · [1x MI325X](https://savrn.com/ai-index/pricing/gpus/mi325x) $2.00 |

Memory is the weights at that precision plus 20% for the runtime and a short context; a long context needs more. Prices are the lowest on-demand hourly rates in the [SAVRN Index](https://savrn.com/ai-index/pricing/gpus), read Oct 24, 2026.

## SAVRN's Notes on bert-base-uncased

Load this at 16-bit and it takes 0.3 GB of the 192 GB on the cheapest card in our table, one MI300X at $1.85 an hour on demand. Nobody buys a card for it; it rides on whatever is already running. The task it ships for is fill mask, the masked language modeling objective it was pretrained on with BookCorpus and Wikipedia, and 512 tokens is the most it takes in one pass.

Apache 2.0 covers commercial use, modification and redistribution, provided you keep the license and copyright notices and state what you changed. Worth knowing before you commit: the team that released it never wrote a model card, so the card is secondhand, and the 16 files on disk total 3.45 GB across seven formats, safetensors to Rust, while the 16-bit weights you run are 0.2 GB. Pull one format, not the folder.

## Model Card

By BERT community, published under apache-2.0, revision 86b5e0934494.

### BERT base model (uncased)

Pretrained model on English language using a masked language modeling (MLM) objective. It was introduced in [this paper](https://savrn.com/papers/bert-pre-training-of-deep-bidirectional-transformers-for-language-understanding) and first released in [this repository](https://github.com/google-research/bert). This model is uncased: it does not make a difference between english and English.

Disclaimer: The team releasing BERT did not write a model card for this model so this model card has been written by the Hugging Face team.

### Model description

BERT is a transformers model pretrained on a large corpus of English data in a self-supervised fashion. This means it was pretrained on the raw texts only, with no humans labeling them in any way (which is why it can use lots of publicly available data) with an automatic process to generate inputs and labels from those texts. More precisely, it was pretrained with two objectives:

## Questions About bert-base-uncased

### How much GPU memory does bert-base-uncased need?

About 0.3 GB at 16-bit and 0.1 GB at 4-bit: the weights (110M parameters) plus a working margin. A long context needs more.

### What is the cheapest GPU to run bert-base-uncased on?

At 16-bit, 1x MI300X from $1.85 an hour; at 4-bit, 1x MI300X from $1.85 an hour, at the lowest on-demand prices the SAVRN Index lists.

### Can I use bert-base-uncased commercially?

Yes. bert-base-uncased is released under Apache License 2.0. The Apache License 2.0 is a permissive open-source license. It permits commercial use, modification and redistribution. It requires keeping the license and copyright notices and any NOTICE file, stating significant changes, and it includes an express patent grant from contributors.

### What is bert-base-uncased's context length?

512 tokens, from the maximum position embeddings in its published configuration.

The latter contains more than 100k long documents from different court cases. It is now on Hugging Face in four different versions with varying number of parameters.
