## Why the island, not the queue

The longest line in most data center schedules is the utility interconnection study. A campus that carries its own load does not stand in that line. It also does not raise a question the community is right to ask: what happens to my rates and my reliability when a large load lands on my grid.

The island answers both. The defined operating load is supplied by on-site resources under stated conditions. If there is a utility connection, it is for a stated purpose and it is disclosed precisely.

## What is inside the island

Proton fuel cells supply baseload. Ion, the grid-forming battery, sets voltage and frequency for the island, absorbs the rapid load changes of a GPU cluster, bridges any transition between sources, and provides black start. Medium-voltage main-tie-main switchgear distributes power to the Atom, and protection is designed for an inverter-fed island rather than borrowed from a utility grid.

Where the site supports it, the plant adds solar, geothermal generation, or gas generation with carbon capture. Each addition is stated in the same terms: nameplate, duty, fuel, emissions and its role in the island.

- Proton fuel cells: baseload, N+1 per Atom.
- Ion storage: grid-forming, rides load steps, islands and black-starts.
- Medium-voltage main-tie-main distribution with island-rated protection.
- Optional resources: solar, geothermal, gas generation with carbon capture.

## Stated on one basis

A credible off-grid plan states what is designed, what is contracted, what is operating and what remains conditional. SAVRN publishes the source of power, the storage duty, the redundancy, the fuel and emissions basis, and the exact grid relationship for every campus, and it keeps the evidence with the platform so it survives an audit.

- Energy storage qualifies for the 48E credit on its own, without being paired to a generator.
- Carbon capture on gas generation is paid per ton under section 45Q for twelve years.
- Standby diesel is not the design answer; the island is engineered to carry the load.

## Key details

- The defined operating load is carried on site under stated conditions.
- Grid-forming storage sets the island's voltage and frequency and rides GPU transients.
- Generation is N+1 so service never interrupts the factory.
- Islanding and black start are designed in, not added later.
- Any utility tie is for a stated purpose and disclosed precisely.
- No standby diesel farm as the plan of record.

What it means for the community

Your lights, your rates and your interconnection queue stay untouched. A SAVRN campus carries its own load, and if it ever exchanges power with the local utility, the terms are stated in public.

## How it is delivered

### Load definition

1. The operating load, its shape and its growth increments are fixed with the Atom count.

### Resource plan

2. Fuel-cell baseload, storage duty, redundancy and any optional resources are sized to that load.

### Grid relationship

3. The utility tie, if any, is negotiated and its purpose written down.

### Build and test

4. Generation and storage are commissioned as one plant, including islanding and black-start tests.

### Evidence

5. Commissioning records and operating data live on the SAVRN platform for the life of the site.

## Questions people ask

Does off-grid mean there is no utility connection at all?

Not necessarily. It means the defined operating load is supplied by on-site resources under stated conditions. If a utility connection exists, its purpose and its terms are disclosed precisely.

Why does an AI factory need a battery if it has fuel cells?

A GPU cluster changes load in milliseconds. The grid-forming battery sets voltage and frequency, absorbs those steps, bridges transitions between sources, and black-starts the island. The fuel cells supply steady baseload.

What happens during maintenance?

Generation is N+1, so a fuel-cell block can be taken out of service while the others carry the factory. Storage covers the transition.

Is diesel part of the design?

Not as the plan of record. The island is engineered to carry the load with fuel cells and storage. Diesel earns no federal credit and adds a combustion emissions profile the design is built to avoid.
