by Sentence Transformers - Cross-Encoders cross-encoder/ms-marco-MiniLM-L4-v2

ms-marco-MiniLM-L4-v2 is an open-weight model for text ranking from Sentence Transformers - Cross-Encoders, released under Apache License 2.0. It has 19M parameters and a 512-token context. At 16-bit it needs about 0 GB of GPU memory, which fits on 1x MI300X from $1.85 an hour, at the lowest prices in the SAVRN Index. It draws 5.4M downloads a month.

This model was trained on the MS Marco Passage Ranking task. The model can be used for Information Retrieval: Given a query, encode the query will all possible passages (e.g. retrieved with ElasticSearch). Then sort the passages in a decreasing order.

What it takes to serve ms-marco-MiniLM-L4-v2 (19M parameters): the memory its weights need at each precision, and the cheapest way to rent enough data-center GPUs to hold them.

Memory is the weights at that precision plus 20% for the runtime and a short context; a long context needs more. Prices are the lowest on-demand hourly rates in the SAVRN Index, read Oct 16, 2026.

SAVRN's Notes on ms-marco-MiniLM-L4-v2

This is one of the most used rerankers anywhere: about 4.8 million downloads a month. A cross-encoder reads the query and each candidate passage together, and this four-layer MiniLM version at 19M parameters is small enough to rerank dozens of results in milliseconds on a CPU.

Apache 2.0 allows commercial use. It is trained on MS MARCO, English web search. For English retrieval pipelines, adding it after first-stage search is one of the cheapest quality gains available; the six- and twelve-layer versions trade a little speed for accuracy.

An English cross-encoder for ranking passages from notes, procedures, decisions and technical documentation. Give it a query and candidate passages; it returns one relevance score per pair. It is a fine-tune of Ettin Reranker 150M and runs locally through ONNX Runtime. This revision adds a Vulkan FP32 graph, model.vulkan.onnx; the learned weights and the CUDA FP16 graph are unchanged. It omits the DirectML graph, which remains in the previous revision. Install tokenizers, numpy and onnxruntime-gpu[cuda,cudnn]==1.24.4. Keep model.onnx, model.onnx.data and the tokenizer from the same package together. This CUDA example assumes that package is in downloaded-model and scores two passages…
