Map of AI data centers in the United States
Every US data center we can name from a primary source, counted against the industry reference figure of 4,767 state by state, and tied to the five SAVRN trackers: which states and counties have paused construction, what water rules apply, which grid operator serves the site, which projects are delayed, and who put capital where.
Copper dots are the 4,621 data centers we can place. Turn on a tracker layer to overlay delayed projects, capital atlas sites, projects blocked or halted, and local restrictions. Shade the states by how many are identified, by the reference count, by grid operator, or by moratorium status. Search any data center, operator, city, or county to find it.
US data centers, counted and sourced
There are 4,761 data centers on this map, identified one at a time from a primary source: the operator's own facility list, a county or state government inventory, or an open infrastructure register. With 150 more planned or under construction, that is 4,911 counted against an industry reference count of 4,767 for the United States.
The states with the most data centers are Virginia (825), California (482), Texas (446), Georgia (262), Illinois (212), Arizona (201), followed by Ohio (188), New York (134), New Jersey (121), Oregon (121). All 51 states with a data center have their own page here, listing every one of them by the city or county it stands in.
839 operators run them. The largest by building count are Lumen (200), Amazon Web Services (162), Digital Realty (104), QTS (104), Verizon Wireless (98), Equinix (92). 1,632 of the data centers publish a floor area and 990 publish a power figure, and a further 812 have a footprint measured from their mapped outline. Those figures are shown per facility rather than added together, because they are not the same measurement: one operator states the floor area of a building, another the full capacity of a campus it has only announced, and a mapped outline is a footprint rather than floor space.
Every data center here is joined to the five SAVRN trackers by its state and county, so the page can answer more than where the buildings are: which states and counties have paused new construction, what water rules apply, which grid operator the site connects to, which projects are delayed or blocked, and who has committed capital. That is 2,246 tracker records and 6,624 links between a data center and a record about the place it stands in.
State by state
Every state and DC. Click a tile to open everything the map and the five trackers hold for that state, or open its own page, which carries the full facility list. The bar is the state's share of the facilities identified so far.
The companies that run them
203 operators with 3 or more data centers on this map, 3,024 buildings between them. Each one has its own page: what the company does, and every data center it runs, by state and then by city, with a line about each building. Names are as the registers write them, after merging aliases like Equinix, Inc. and EQUINIX LLC into one company.

Each company is classified by what it says it does on its own site, one at a time, and every label was then re-checked against the company's own words. Wholesale leases whole halls or buildings, usually to one tenant. Colocation leases cabinets, cages and suites to many. Interconnection is reserved for companies whose core product is the meet-me-room itself, which is 6 of the 203 here, not the 71 an earlier automatic pass produced by treating the presence of networks in a building as the business model. The rest are network carriers, cloud platforms, developers that build and lease sites without operating them, hosting and managed IT, bitcoin mining, AI compute, and enterprise-owned facilities a university, agency or exchange runs for itself. Logos are the icon each company publishes on its own site; 176 of 203 have one and the rest carry a monogram. An operator's website is linked only where a source states a domain that matches the company, so no card sends you to the wrong company.
Five trackers, one map
Each tracker keeps its own source of truth and refresh schedule. The map reads those files directly, so what you see here is what the tracker page shows, keyed to the state, county, or site it describes.
68 state measures and 280 local pauses, each with its primary source. Local pauses attach to the county or city and to every facility placed there.
Open the trackerFederal, regional, state, and local water measures. Federal measures apply everywhere; state and local measures attach to their jurisdiction.
Open the trackerThe dominant RTO or ISO for every state and DC, with the split notes for states served by more than one operator. Every facility inherits its state's operator.
Open the tracker224 named projects, 658 county and city restrictions, 229 utility dockets, 39 lawsuits, and 192 queue rows and large-load studies.
Open the tracker159 named sites with announced capital and 127 projects blocked, delayed, or halted, placed by coordinates and linked to the nearest mapped facility.
Open the trackerHow the map is built
Facility layer. Three open registers are pulled by script and merged into one database. Records from different sources within 250 meters that share a name or operator token are treated as one building; a Wikidata item within 400 meters of a placed facility is attached to it. Nothing is estimated to fill a gap: a facility with no coordinates in its source is placed at the centroid of other facilities in the same city and marked as city-level, and a facility whose typed state disagrees with its coordinates keeps the typed state and is re-placed the same way. Each point is assigned to a county with Census Bureau boundaries, which is the key the trackers join on.
Coverage and the target. The industry reference count for the United States is 4,767 facilities from 1,900 operators, and this map is built to reconcile to it. This build identifies 4,761 data centers, from 1,376 PeeringDB records, 1,791 OpenStreetMap features, 15 Wikidata items, and 3,965 buildings read from operator websites and government inventories. 4,621 of them are plotted; the other 140 publish no coordinates and appear in their state's table. With 150 planned or under-construction sites that is 4,911, or 103.0 percent of the target. The national totals now agree, but 26 states are still short by 470 between them while 25 run over by 615, so the reconciliation in "All the underlying data" below, not this percentage, is the measure of what is left. The directory's own listings are proprietary and its terms forbid copying them into another database, so nothing was taken from it; only its published per-state totals are used, as the ledger to reconcile against.
The listing threshold. The reference count lists a facility only at ten cabinets or more, so a building too small to hold that should not be counted. Every OpenStreetMap building was measured from its own outline, a median footprint of 120,066 square feet, and the unnamed ones below 200 square metres were dropped as below the threshold. Anything named or attributed to an operator is kept whatever its size, because the source vouches for it. Those measurements also give 1,632 facilities a published or measured floor area and 990 a published power figure.
Counting rule. The target counts unique facilities: every facility listing with no parent or sitting under a campus or multi-tenant building, with a campus of unknown building count counting once, a minimum of ten cabinets, and all four lifecycle stages included (land banked, planned, under construction, operating). This map is counted the same way, which is why planned and under-construction sites from the capital atlas and delay watchlist join the placed facilities in the comparison, and why a campus we can only place as one point counts once.
Tracker joins. State-level records join on the state. Local records are geocoded by county name first, then by city, using Census county boundaries, the placed facilities themselves, and the capital atlas place table; records that cannot be placed below the state are listed for the state but not drawn. Capital atlas sites carry coordinates and are linked to the nearest mapped facility within ten kilometers. Every record on this page keeps its source URL, and clicking a source opens it in a panel here rather than leaving the page.

Reconciled against the 4,767
The industry reference count for the United States is 4,767 facilities from 1,900 operators. That is the number this map is built to match. It counts every facility listing that has no parent or sits under a campus or multi-tenant building, a campus of unknown building count counting once, at a minimum of ten cabinets, across all four lifecycle stages. Measured the same way, this map holds 4,911, which is 103.0 percent: 4,761 data centers identified and 150 planned or under construction. The national totals agree, but that is a net figure and it hides the real state of the work: 26 states are still short, by 470 between them, while 25 states run over by 615, because county permit records name more buildings than a commercial listing count does. Matching the national number is not the same as finding every data center, and the table below is the honest measure. Each row below is a state's own ledger, so the work left is visible rather than averaged away.

Sorted by the size of the gap. Pipeline sites are planned or under construction projects from the capital atlas and delay watchlist that do not already match an identified building; the reference count includes those stages, so they belong in the comparison. Nine states read above 100 percent, which means the primary sources name more facilities there than the reference count lists. New Jersey is the clearest case: its carrier hotels hold many independently operated data centers that the reference count appears to treat as fewer listings.
Frequently asked
How many data centers are in the United States?
The industry reference count is 4,767 facilities from 1,900 operators, counting every facility listing that has no parent or sits under a campus or multi-tenant building, at a minimum of ten cabinets, across all four lifecycle stages. This map is built to reconcile to that number and currently holds 4,911 of it, 103.0 percent: 4,761 placed facilities plus 150 planned or under-construction sites. The reconciliation under "All the underlying data" shows the remaining -144 state by state.
Where does the facility data come from?
Primary sources only. Each operator publishes its own facility list, and those buildings are read from the operator site that states them. PeeringDB is the register network operators maintain for the buildings they interconnect in, with addresses and coordinates. OpenStreetMap contributors map data center buildings and sites. Wikidata carries notable facilities with owner, opening year, and an encyclopedia article. Records from different sources that describe the same building are merged by distance and name, and every merged record keeps each source id.
How are the trackers connected to the map?
Every tracker record carries a state, and most carry a county or city. State-level measures attach to the state. Local measures attach to the county or city, and through it to every facility mapped there. Capital atlas sites and at-risk projects carry coordinates and are linked to the nearest mapped facility within ten kilometers. 6,624 such links exist today.
Which state has the most data centers?
By the target count: Virginia (674), Texas (537), California (296). By what this map places today: Virginia (825), California (482), Texas (446). Coverage is highest in the interconnection-heavy metros and lowest where hyperscale and enterprise campuses dominate, because those buildings appear in no public register. The widest gaps right now are PA (73), TX (69), OH (42).
How often is the map refreshed?
The facility layer is rebuilt from the source registers by script. The tracker layers refresh on their own schedules: the moratorium tracker and delay watchlist weekly, the capital atlas three times a week, and the water tracker weekly. The date at the top of the page is the last full rebuild.
