This is an unofficial mirror of the input data for the CICE sea ice model, as listed on the official CICE Input Data wiki page. All data are produced and published by the CICE Consortium on Zenodo. Files are the original, unmodified .tar.gz archives (not unpacked); MD5 checksums were verified against Zenodo.

Official statement: these data are provided for testing the code only. They are not meant to be used for publishing scientific results.

Contents

Not mirrored: the gx1 and tx1 JRA55 multi-year tar files (Zenodo 3731014, 10044769); they contain the same data as the per-year files included here.

Directory layout

Mirrors the CICE_data/ grid organisation. Unpack each archive inside your CICE_data/ directory (tar xzf <file>), as described in the wiki.

• gx3/ – 3° displaced-pole grid: grid + initial conditions, JRA55do, JRA55, WW3, NCAR_bulk forcing
• gx1/ – 1° displaced-pole grid: grid + IC (3 versions: 20210319, 20210402, 20210816 — the wiki points at the latest), JRA55do and JRA55 by year (2005–2009), WOA, COREII (deprecated), CESM slab-ocean forcing (two versions)
• tx1/ – 1° tripole grid: grid + IC, JRA55do and JRA55 by year (2005–2009)
• tx1m/ – tx1m grid and JRA55do 2005 forcing
• snicar/ – SNICAR snow optical-property tables
• optional/ – optional 50-year gx1 forcing scripts
• manifest.csv – path, size, md5, source DOI/URL, verification status for every file

ERA5 surface forcing (ERA5/)

Hourly ERA5 single-level reanalysis fields, added alongside the CICE data for building custom atmospheric forcing.

• Source: Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), ERA5 hourly data on single levels from 1940 to present (reanalysis-era5-single-levels), downloaded from the Climate Data Store. Files are unmodified CDS output.
• Period: 2005-01 – 2009-12, all hours, global 0.25° grid, one NetCDF file per month: ERA5/<year>/era5_sl_<YYYYMM>.nc (kept as .zip if CDS delivered a zip).
• Variables: 10m_u_component_of_wind, 10m_v_component_of_wind, 2m_temperature, 2m_dewpoint_temperature, total_precipitation, snowfall, surface_solar_radiation_downwards, surface_thermal_radiation_downwards, mean_sea_level_pressure, surface_pressure.
• Manifest: ERA5/manifest.csv (path, size, md5, time steps).
• License: CC-BY 4.0. Contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information [2026]. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use of this information.
